How do you make a family photoshoot fun?

Many people dread awkward family photos. Ideally, the session will capture the fun of being a family not some stolid rote textbook-posed postcard.

So how do we make it fun?

Fun Family Photoshoots

Get in close, arms around each other and hug. You will laugh and play the fool and most likely capture a moment. Don’t worry if it feels silly: the moment will take over. Let the kids take the lead.

A lesson I learned long ago that changed my family photography forever:

When I first started shooting family portraits I had a huge family all lined up. I walked them along the shoreline and the ended up getting soaked… kids crying, adults laughing.

The photos were even slightly blurry. I was mortified but when I presented them the mother was overjoyed: “Jason, you captured our TRUE family!”

Shoot Outdoors at a local park or beach. That way you can move, walk around and be inspired by the environment. Outdoors takes the pressure and focus off you all. Don’t worry about the weather: grey days mean less shadows.

Formal Family Photos

Do the Opposite: Get Formal and Pose!

Dress up to the 9s and go somewhere fancy. Act the part and enjoy the moment. Make the poses over the top.

Formal Family Photos

Be Candid: don’t look at the camera and let the kids roam. See what happens.
