General Clothing advice: There is no one best outfit/color/pattern for headshots (just as there is no one best partner or car).
If you insist: Colors that match your eyes are generally good
Clothing can be simple, timeless and suggest “professional” without any distraction. Perhaps avoid light colors that approximate flesh tones such as beige, tan, peach, and yellow.
Maybe avoid patterns, stripes, checkers. Black as well as Mid-tone colors can work best.
Cool colors are good too because they make skin tones warm by contrast. For men, a dark suit jacket (black, grey or navy), white or light colored plain shirt works great (no undershirt showing, shirt should be pressed)
For a more business casual look, some clients opt for a shirt, without a jacket. In this case a blue, lavender or pastel colored shirt often works great.
I usually recommend you bring several options of clothing. What works in “real life” may not translate well to a photo (this also goes for expressions). I will discuss this further with you on our phone conversation before the shoot.
I absolutely understand most Professionals do not look forward to having their headshots taken. Don't worry after 20 years I specialise in making people relaxed at their photoshoot. People often say to me that they were surprised they enjoyed the session! See my testimonials.
